We have actually owned the ranch for 8 years but only opened for U-Pick for the first time last year (2007). That wonderful success was short lived. Heavy, hot Santa Ana winds caused massive apple drop. And fires in our local Mountain range that started the same time as the winds caused the Forest Service to close all of the Forest Service roads, including the road to our ranch. They remained closed until the threat of fire had passed.
But while we were open, people came here for the first time and couldn't believe the huge apple trees heavily laden with huge crispy apples! Our first season was a huge success for the time we were open! It was amazing for us to see people in the orchard, delighted with the huge apples they were finding. They were laughing and having a wonderful time! They also couldn't believe the beauty of the ranch itself! Situated in the Upper Santa Ana River Valley, we have views of the spectacular mountains, and down the valley for miles and miles!
Aside from the apples, we have a small herd of Boer Goats. This year we had six babies and they are healthy, happy and sweet! They help us with brush control. Where people look at the brush and think of a fire hazard or how much work it would be to control it. The goats look at it as a magnificent buffet! They happily browse all day long and look forward to the next day!
In the future we hope to add additional fruits and vegetables, turkeys, chickens (for eggs and meat) and guinea fowl. All free range, and all organic!
This years crop looks wonderful! Our early varieties are getting huge! It looks like our Macintosh will be the first ones ripe. With their purple hue, smooth texture and spicy flavor they are some of our favorites! As apple lovers, we are so blessed to live there! We are so spoiled!
